One-Day Plastic Repair and Refinishing Course (PR-04)

This one-day course will teach students how to repair and refinish automotive plastic parts like bumper covers, headlight tabs, fender liners, fluid reservoirs, and more.

Students will get hands-on experience using the nitrogen plastic welder to make strong repairs on a variety of damaged plastic parts. Emphasis will be placed on the proper nitrogen fusion welding technique.

Students will also observe a step-by-step demonstration of the proper use of plastic refinishing products such as adhesion promoter, filler, and primer. This course will also include a demonstration of the proper way to remove dents from bumper covers.

Shops that take advantage of plastic repair opportunities can experience reduced cycle time, reduced average cost to repair, and increased profits.

The PR-04 is a condensed version of our two-day course offered at the factory. It will take approximately 8 hours to complete. This course is intended to be delivered in the customer’s place of business, so the facilities for instruction will not be as complete. Due to time and facility constraints, some compromises will have to be made with regard to instruction.

This course is designed to be:

Delivered by one instructor,
using two welders and two workstations,
for up to four technicians per session (two techs at each workstation),
in the customer’s shop by Polyvance-trained instructors.

Properly operate the nitrogen plastic welder
Prep plastic parts for welding
Weld a tear to the edge of a bumper cover
Repair a torn slot tab
Repair a torn flange
Perform a weld test to identify plastic
Repair a thermoset polyurethane (PUR) bumper cover with an airless plastic welder
Work out dents and distortions in a plastic bumper cover
Explain the process of repairing and refinishing a broken headlight mounting tab
Refinish a welded bumper cover

Course Name	PR-04 One-Day Plastic Repair & Refinishing
Description	This one-day course will teach students how to repair and refinish automotive plastic parts like bumper covers, headlight tabs, fender liners, fluid reservoirs, and more.
Instructor-led or Online?	Instructor-led.
Training Needs	Many technicians are confused by the plastic identification process. Use of the nitrogen welding equipment is often misunderstood. Technicians who have never used plastic welding equipment need hands-on instruction to fully understand the process. The removal of dents and deformations in plastic bumper covers is not well understood by many repair technicians. Many bumper covers are discarded because of damage to small detail areas that are repairable with the nitrogen plastic welder. The technician needs hands-on experience repairing these commonly damaged areas. Many technicians are under the mistaken impression that thermoset polyurethane (PUR, the “yellow plastic”) bumper covers are not repairable. The refinish of plastic parts is a topic thought to be problematic by many repair technicians.

Prerequisites	No prior training course experience necessary.
Recommended experience	Knowledge of basic body shop tools.
Time Required	Approximately eight hours.
Is it recognized under I-CAR®’s Industry Training Alliance® program?	Yes. Students who complete this training are eligible to receive seven (7) I-CAR® annual training credits. Students MUST perform all hands-on activities and complete the pre-test and post-test evaluations. I-CAR® credits are included with the cost of this course because Polyvance is an I-CAR® Sustaining Partner (only in the United States).
Location	Scheduled at your place of business.
Work Area Requirements	Access to a classroom area and shop.
Cost	$2,700 per session for up to four students simultaneously (assuming two welders and workstations are available at your shop for the training). Depending on location, there may be additional travel expenses.
