Plastic Repair & Estimating Advancement Program (AP-01)

The Plastic Repair & Estimating Advancement Program combines Polyvance’s EPR-02 and PR-01 training courses into a one-day training program for your shop. The goal of the program is to train shop personnel to recognize more plastic repair opportunities and perform quality repairs.

The EPR-02 Estimating Plastic Repair course educates estimators and other collision repair industry professionals on the variables involved in estimating the repair of damaged automotive plastics.

The PR-01 Introduction to Nitrogen Plastic Welding course provides an introduction to the repair of thermoplastic automotive parts using a nitrogen plastic welder.

Estimating Plastic Repair (EPR-02) Training Objectives:

Recognize plastic repair opportunities
Understand the different methods of plastic repair
Make an informed decision on repairing or replacing damaged plastic
Accurately gauge the severity of damage on bumper covers
Accurately gauge the severity of damage on headlights
Determine if a damaged textured part can be repaired or if it should be replaced

Introduction to Nitrogen Plastic Welding (PR-01)Training Objectives:

Identify different plastic types
Understand the basic nitrogen welding process
Properly operate the nitrogen plastic welder
Prep a bumper cover for welding
Weld a tear to the edge of a bumper cover
Repair a torn slot tab
Repair a torn flange
Perform a weld test to identify plastic
Repair a thermoset polyurethane (PUR) bumper cover using an airless plastic welder

Course Name	AP-01 Plastic Repair & Estimating Advancement Program
Description	The Plastic Repair & Estimating Advancement Program combines Polyvance’s EPR-02 and PR-01 training courses into a one-day training program for your shop. The goal of the program is to train shop personnel to recognize more plastic repair opportunities and perform quality repairs.
Instructor-led or Online?	Instructor-led.
Training Needs	Many plastic parts that could be repaired are discarded because the estimator does not know how to determine the repairability of the part. This negatively impacts the shop's labor hours billed, its repair vs. replace ratio, and its cycle time. Many estimators do not have experience in plastic repair and are thus unfamiliar with the terminology, tools, and techniques involved. This makes communication with the technicians difficult when it comes making repair vs. replace decisions on plastic parts. Determining the repairability of damaged plastic parts depends on the type of plastic, the application, the tools and equipment available, and the technicians' skill level, among other things. Most estimators (and many technicians) are unfamiliar with these subjects. Determining the repairability of plastic bumper damage often takes years of experience doing actual repairs since no two types of damage on any bumper are identical. Many technicians are confused by the plastic identification process. Use of the nitrogen welding equipment is often misunderstood. Technicians who have never used the equipment need hands-on instruction to fully understand the process. Many bumpers are discarded because of damage to small detail areas that are repairable with the nitrogen plastic welder. The technician needs hands-on experience repairing these commonly damaged areas. Many technicians are under the mistaken impression that thermoset polyurethane (PUR, the “yellow plastic”) bumpers are not repairable.

Prerequisites	No prior training course experience necessary.
Time Required	The EPR-02 and PR-01 take approximately three hours each.
Are these two courses recognized under I-CAR®’s Industry Training Alliance® program?	Students who complete the EPR-02 are eligible to receive three (3) I-CAR® annual training credits. Students MUST complete the pre-test and post-test evaluations and view the live demonstration. Students who complete the PR-01 are eligible to receive three (3) I-CAR® annual training credits. Students MUST perform all hands-on activities and complete the pre-test and post-test evaluations. I-CAR® credits are included with the cost of these courses because Polyvance is an I-CAR® Sustaining Partner (only in the United States).
Location	Scheduled at your place of business.
Work Area Requirements	Access to a classroom area and shop.
Cost	$1,800. Depending on location, there may be additional travel expenses.
