2.) Have the mentor introduce more advanced methods of dent repair as the apprentice gains skill. |
Cleaning the Surfaces | Skill Level 1 |

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels | Work Practices | 1.) Clean frontside with soap & water, then compatible solvent-based cleaner. |
2.) Remove undercoating and/or corrosion protection from the backside as needed. | ||
In-Shop Experience | 1.) Use the PPE appropriate for the products being used. | |
2.) Clean and prep the surfaces for dent removal as needed. | ||
Skills Assessment | 1.) Observe the apprentice's use of PPE and products. |
Straighten the Metal | Skill Level 3 |

2.) Check for holes or cracks in metal (removal of finish may be needed at this step.) | ||

Application of Body Filler | Skill Level 3 |

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels | Work Practices | 1.) Research repair material Technical Data Sheets to understand preparation and application process. |
2.) Sand or remove paints and undercoats per instructions. | ||
3.) Apply filler with a firm pressure thin first coat. Apply additional wet coats as needed. | ||
4.) Sand filler after appropriate cure time with the recommended grit sandpaper. | ||
5.) Check and return repaired area to desired level with corresponding surfaces. | ||
6.) Reapply filler or glaze coat if needed. | ||
7.) Check for unwanted sandscratches and pinholes prior to primer application. | ||
In-Shop Experience | 1.) After removing dents with hammer and dolly, apply filler using proper methods and PPE. | |
2.) Sand and finish filler to prepare for primer. | ||
