Safety	Skill Level 1

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	1.) Wear all necessary PPE for all tasks to be performed.
		2.) Read and understand all SDS publications for materials to be used.
		3.) Read and understand all TDS publications for materials to be used.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Learn where product SDS and TDSs are stored.
		2.) Research which PPE is needed for the materials used.
		3.) Know where you PPE is stored and when to use it.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Test apprentice by asking him/her to research a specific product, determine its proper use, and the proper PPE to use.
		2.) Make sure apprentice knows where PPE is stored and how to use it.

Identify Material Type	Skill Level 1

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	1.) Refer to OEM repair guidelines for repair methods; for example, is the use of heat allowed for this material?
		2.) If steel, identify hardness; for example, is it HSS or UHSS?
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Learn where OEM repair guidelines can be accessed.
		2.) Watch your mentor resarch a specific repair and determine the type of metal from which the panel is made.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Test apprentice by asking him/her to find and research a specific repair using the OEM repair guidelines.
		2.) Ask the apprentice to determine whether a specific panel is made from HSS or UHSS.

Planning the Repair	Skill Level 2

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	Which is the best repair option for the dent and material?
		1.) Conventional hammer and dolly method (with backside access)
		2.) Paintless Dent Repair
		3.) Glue Pull Repair
		4.) Push the backside using PDR type tools
		5.) Stud pin/key welding
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Ask and watch your mentor's decision process when planning the repair of a small dent in a metal panel.
		2.) Watch your mentor perform metal dent repairs via different means.
		3.) Get experience removing dents with hammer and dolly first, then progress to more advanced methods as your skills advance.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Test the apprentice's skill level on scrapped fenders using the hammer and dolly method first.
	Skills Assessment	2.) Have the mentor introduce more advanced methods of dent repair as the apprentice gains skill.

Cleaning the Surfaces	Skill Level 1

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	1.) Clean frontside with soap & water, then compatible solvent-based cleaner.
		2.) Remove undercoating and/or corrosion protection from the backside as needed.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Use the PPE appropriate for the products being used.
		2.) Clean and prep the surfaces for dent removal as needed.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Observe the apprentice's use of PPE and products.

Straighten the Metal	Skill Level 3

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	1.) Execute plan for removing the lows and highs to as close to original shape as possible.
		2.) Check for holes or cracks in metal (removal of finish may be needed at this step.)
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Remove dents using hammer and dolly method first to gain experience.
		2.) Get introduction to more advanced method from mentor as you gain skill.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Assess the quality of the metal finishing on scrap pieces first, allow apprentice to work on customer vehicles as skills advance.

Application of Body Filler	Skill Level 3

Repair of Small Dents in Metal Panels	Work Practices	1.) Research repair material Technical Data Sheets to understand preparation and application process.
		2.) Sand or remove paints and undercoats per instructions.
		3.) Apply filler with a firm pressure thin first coat. Apply additional wet coats as needed.
		4.) Sand filler after appropriate cure time with the recommended grit sandpaper.
		5.) Check and return repaired area to desired level with corresponding surfaces.
		6.) Reapply filler or glaze coat if needed.
		7.) Check for unwanted sandscratches and pinholes prior to primer application.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) After removing dents with hammer and dolly, apply filler using proper methods and PPE.
	In-Shop Experience	2.) Sand and finish filler to prepare for primer.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Assess the quality of filler finishing on scrap pieces first, allow apprentice to work on customer vehicles as skills advance.
